People respond differently to ozone. Some people feel a burst of energy from the increased oxygen; some people do not feel well at first because of the detoxifying effects. Clients who are in need of a heavy detox sometimes return for a signature wellness IV to help them feel better as their body eliminates the toxins and jump starts the immune system.

Labs Required for Ozone

At the initial IV ozone therapy appointment, the ozone therapy is not titrated up as high in order to ease clients into the process and ensure that the therapy is well-tolerated. Following the initial ozone clients are required to have three labs drawn: G6PD, CBC, CMP. The labs are able to be drawn in-house and processed with insurance or cash-pay lab option, with our lab partner Northwestern Labs.

Labs are also required before the first high-dose ozone therapy treatment.

Ozone & UltraViolet Light Therapy

What is ozone?

When you hear the word “ozone,” you may immediately think of the ozone layer in our atmosphere that protects us from the ultraviolet radiation from the sun. The sun’s ultraviolet rays are what create ozone (O3). Ozone (O3), is an energized form of oxygen which contains three atoms of oxygen rather than the two we normally breathe. Ozone is the second most powerful sterilizer in the world and can be used to destroy bacteria, viruses, and odors. Interestingly, ozone occurs quite readily in nature, most often as a result of lightning strikes that occur during thunderstorms. In fact, the “fresh, clean, spring rain” smell that we notice after a storm most often results from the creation of ozone.

How does ozone work?

The third oxygen atom of ozone makes it extremely reactive, readily attaching itself to other molecules. When contaminants such as bacteria or viruses make contact with ozone, it creates a minuscule hole in the cell wall. After the ozone breaches the cell wall, the bacteria will be unable to survive. This process is called “oxidation.” Once used, ozone reverts to oxygen, making it a very environmentally friendly oxidant.

Isn’t ozone a pollutant?

The ozone we are using is not the same as the ground-level ozone we hear about. Stratospheric ozone forms naturally in the upper atmosphere and protects us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. It is that type of natural ozone–one just made by adding an oxygen atom–that we use.

Is ozone safe?

Ozone therapy is a safe and effective treatment option. Before receiving ozone therapy at Down to Earth, clients will have some required blood work to make sure they will tolerate the therapy safely. While ozone therapy is not FDA approved, there is substantial evidence to support its efficacy.

How is medical ozone produced?

There are two methods of producing ozone: ultraviolet (UV) and corona discharge. Corona discharge creates ozone by applying high-voltage to a metallic grid sandwiched between two dielectrics. The voltage passes through the dielectric to a grounded screen/ plate and in the process, creates ozone from oxygen present in the chamber. UV light creates ozone when a wavelength of 254 nanometers (nm) hits an oxygen atom. Both processes split oxygen molecules into single oxygen atoms (O). These atoms combine with another oxygen molecule (O2) to form ozone (O3), which physicians then use medically.

What’s the difference between regular ozone and high-dose ozone?

High-dose ozone is essentially three therapies in one. It is not available for a client’s first treatment. High-dose ozone is typically something that we work up to giving a client.

If someone is transferring to us from another ozone clinic, would we start at the same level?

It depends on how long it has been since your previous ozone treatment and the dosage the other clinic was using. With the necessary blood work and records, the provider will advise you about the best plan and work with you to meet your goals.
